Cool Stuff. Useless, but Cool.

What was lost has now been found. Discovered after cleaning and sorting my studio:
A bucket of crystal chandelier drops. I don't have a chandelier. I have never had a chandelier.

A bag of old, tarnished Christmas ornaments. I have boxes of them. Why aren't these with the rest?
My collection of beverage coasters from around the world. Don't ask.
Vintage bottle caps. Mr. Catnip urged me to keep them, as I recall. This was a noteable event in our marriage.
Old, original chippy paint fake candle electric wall lamp. I just had to have it. So I could stick it in a box and forget about it.
Gorgeous old ceramic lamp base. The rest of the lamp is unremarkable. Again, I just had to have it. So I could stick it in a box know the rest.
At the bottom of the "had to have it" box, just what I needed - more chandelier drops.

Lollishops and Elegant Whimsy

Lollishops, a juried marketplace for artists specializing in fanciful, romantic, elegant, and whimsical creations, is having a contest on the Lollishops Blog. The guest blogger, Laura Bray, has challenged us to blog about living the Elegant Whimsy lifestyle - something in our house, or something we do.

Now, just to catch you up, Lollishops will have three main categories: Fanciful Creations, Romantic Inspirations, and Elegant Whimsy. I'm in Romantic Inspirations, primarily, for my vintage broken floral china jewelry, mosaics, and decoupage ornaments. Soooo, off I went, on a hunt through my home, to track down something elegant, AND whimsical. It was a tough crowd, with floral teacups, traditional still life paintings, and elegant (but NOT whimsical) statuary jeering at me as I valiantly whisked by with my trusty digital camera in hand. Room by room, getting more discouraged with each realization that, in fact, I AM NOT a whimsical decorator!

But all is not lost. I entered the last room, the laundry room, to the faint tinklings of a heavenly choir. The choir reached crescendo heights as I looked up to beloved collection of fu dogs! Collected over twenty years, up and down the state of California, and all over the world, they signified safety and protection and home. Loyal dogs always at the ready, whether in storage, or relegated to the laundry room. Were they elegant? I think so, in their own doggy way. Were they whimsical? Perhaps only to me. What do you think?

S-S-Studio! (Monkey in the Middle Monday)

Progress has occurred on last Monday's studio shambles. Since Mr. Catnip forbids my studio messes to spill over into our house and yard (go figure), I've moved a bunch of things I don't need (yet) out of my studio into storage, gave away a table that was taking up floor space, and, surprise of all surprises, found lots of Cool Stuff I had completely forgotten about! Useless stuff, but Cool. Cool Stuff pics later this week.

Be sure to check out what monkey goodness my friend, Steph at Sunshine&Ravioli, has been up to for MIMM! Click here for the historic scoop on Monkey in the Middle Monday.

On the left, my desk is clear at last! On the right, my drafting table with nothing on it but a pad of paper (yesss)!
My tile-cutting bench. Still a mess, but a much smaller one.
Today, I sat at my studio desk and basked in the glow of a job well done. Then I made another mess.

Studio Shambles (Monkey in the Middle Monday)

Well, after finishing the mosaic tabletop, and some new mosaic trays, and a few pairs of earrings, and cutting up some tiles, my studio is a disaster of dried grout, storage drawers pulled out, and stuff stacked everywhere! Okay, okay, this mess didn't happen in one week, it just HAPPENED, somehow.....soooo, my monkey this Monday is getting this chaos under control by next Monday (I know you're nodding your head, wryly thinking "good luck with THAT," don't deny it). For more Monkey in the Middle Monday goodness, stop by and say hello to Stephanie at Sunshine&Ravioli, our MIMM hostess. She has some lovely projects in progress!

There's a desk under all that mess, really!

Jars of mosaic tiles that once were plates.

My tile-cutting bench and a bunch of other projects.

Plates waiting for their turn. Waiting, and waiting...
Now, I've got to get to work on the transformation! Where is that magic wand...

Speaking of Monkeys...

...I recently made an Etsy treasury of home decor goodies from fellow members of Design Style Guide / Etsy's Interior Design Team called "Monkey Love and Jungle Fever," and one of the featured sellers, MaiaArt (follow the link to see her amazing artwork!), sent me the cute picture shown above.

I emailed the photo to Mr. Catnip, and he emailed back "cute."

I emailed him, "Yeah, but who's the monkey and who's the pigeon?"

He responded, "I'm the handsome one."

I returned, "Well, that would make me the gorgeous one built like a brick outhouse."

Marital humor at its best.

The 300 Pound Gorilla (Monkey in the Middle Monday)

AT LAST!!! The 300 pound gorilla, no puny little banana-eatin' Monkey in the Middle Monday monkey, is finally off of my broken, bowed back! I finished it last night, after months of hating every single mosaic semi-circle (custom request), and snapped photos this morning. This was my first large mosaic (large for me, anyway, at about 2 x 3 feet), and my first semi-circle attempt. May I just say - not my favorite pattern to execute, though I learned a lot. A LOT. As in, everything NOT to do (grimace). The important thing is how much the new owner loves it, and how perfectly it fits into her home decor. I am so happy that she is happy, and I can visit the table whenever I want to. I don't see THAT happening any time soon ;-) Click here to see the table in progress, and please visit MIMM hostess Sunshine and Ravioli for more Monkey in the Middle Monday, and luscious cottage goodness, too!

Personal Best

Yesterday, I achieved a personal best - five treasuries featured a handmade home decor item from my Etsy shop, Catnip Studio, Too! Plus, three silver stars (alternate selection)! Yep, I'm braggin' and I have no shame...

Treasuries are a big deal on Etsy, or not, depending on who you ask. They give their creators (curators), and those items featured, special visibility amongst the tens of thousands upon tens of thousands of wonderful choices on Etsy. A chance (however small it may be) to have your treasury selected for Etsy's front page, or to be featured within a treasury on the front page, is one reason that "snagging" a treasury (read: waiting for an hour or more for the magic box popup signaling that treasuries are available if you are quick and don't blink), or being selected for one, is a big deal as it often results in shop sales for those featured. But, most important of all, they are just FUN!

So that's the short explanation of treasuries on Etsy, and I won't bore you more with a long one, except to add that treasuries are kind of like mayflies - they don't live long (only 1-3 days), so I didn't link the screen shots.

Red X marks my spot on each treasury, and my thanks to the wonderful and talented curators/artists: Artsy Rubbish, Flying Colors, Tag's Cats, The Crocodile Rock, and Torrie Smiley.
